Our guests from Iceland and the Polish project group were cordially welcomed by our Headmaster Leszek Duszynski. The ceremony was glamorous. The artistic programme performed by Polish project students included a choir performance, a short piano concert, a few songs accompanied by the guitar and a dance show. Everybody was also treated to delicious home-made cakes- all baked by our students.
Then there was time to learn about Icelandic culture. Our partners presented us with fabulous information about their country such as traditions, sports, myths, flora and fauna. The beautiful landscapes made a big impression on the audience. Each student talked about one cultural aspect of their country. For some students public speaking was a real challenge because addressing an international audience in a foreign language can be very stressful, but they all did an excellent job.
Our students also presented important information about Poland including its history, national dishes and beautiful places. There was also a presentation about Wrocław virtually guided by one of our famous dwarves.
Another point of our school meeting was a dance workshop. Our PE teachers taught the guests our national dance polonez. Most did very well, and we hope it was a fun experience.
The second part of the day was totally devoted to our project work.
The Polish students showed a few presentations connected directly with the project theme, Your Health is Your Wealth.
Polish students gave a presentation about brain friendly foods called superfoods. We found out that many fruits and vegetables enhance our brain power. They contain lots of unique elements healthy for the brain. Beets, for example, contain lots of nitrates, which help increase blood flow to the brain. More blood flow means more brain power, including better memory, sharper reasoning skills, improved attention span and better concentration. Spinach is high in lutein, an antioxidant that cleanses toxins from the brain and prevents age-related mental decline. Blueberries and strawberries contain polyphenolics and flavonoids, which improve memory by removing toxins from the brain.
Other examples of superfoods include fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and trout. They contain high levels of an Omega-3 fatty acid called DHA. Dark chocolate improves mental acuity and promotes higher attention span and concentration.
Water plays a big role in the proper function of the brain, which can actually shrink when dehydrated. Water also helps remove toxins that have negative effect on our ability to think and concentrate
There was also a presentation about the brain and its neuroplasticity. According to the research we can “rewire” our brain to improve our health, wellbeing and the quality of life. The neuron networks which affect our thinking are highly plastic and can change. Conscious generation of positive attitude and behavior results in creation of strong neural connections responsible for our optimistic approach to life.
All the students’ productions are being systematically added to the student work sectionof the website.
The day ended with a trip to Sky Tower, from the top of which the whole project group admired a panorama of our city.
